I'm Kirk Wheeler. It's January 20th, 2021. I'm so glad you're here.
Today in the United States it's Inauguration day, where we would normally be celebrating with a peaceful transfer of power. But this year is very different. So I thought I'd stay with Martin Luther King Jr. and one of my favorite quotes of his, about a decision we all need to make when ignorance is the source.
"Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism, or in the darkness of destructive selfishness." -Martin Luther King Jr.
As I was reviewing some quotes for the podcast this week, this one in particular has stuck with me. It's a choice we all have to make every day, whether we're going to walk in the light, or in the darkness.
It reminds me of a phrase I've been thinking a lot about, energy follows attention. The things that become real in our lives are the things that we choose to pay attention to.
And this is something we can share with our kids. We can tell them the stories of the times we took the wrong path, and help them make better choices in the future.
This is a very ancient choice. Many people have had to make it over time. It's one of the most amazing things about human beings, that we created language and writing to be able to communicate in stories, how we can make better choices, which roads are worth walking and which ones have an ending that we would all rather avoid.
And so today as the United States begins a new chapter, my hope is that more people will choose the path of creative altruism over the path of selfishness. But it starts with us, it starts with us sharing our stories with our children and helping them learn how to choose a better way forward.
I hope you found this helpful. And remember there is no perpetual parenting playbook. We're all learning as we go. And with curiosity is our map. And kindness as the language we choose to use, we can be ready for anything.
So good luck today. You've got this. See you tomorrow.
