I'm Kirk Wheeler. It's January 13th, 2021. I'm so glad you're here.

Yesterday. I alluded to a simple solution that is often overlooked, and it's one that can improve everything from getting homework done, to the surgery ward at your local hospital.

But it often begins with what we think we are doing right, but are actually forgetting to do at all. Here too, Ignorance is the source.

"This has never been a problem before people say until one day it is." -Atul Gawande

This quote is from The Checklist Manifesto by Atul Gawande. He's written some amazing books. From Being mortal, to Better: A Surgeon's Notes on Performance. But in The Checklist Manifesto, he tells story after story, about how something as simple as a checklist can save lives. And how it can make our everyday lives easier as well.

As a human being trying to help other human beings navigate the complexity of the world that surrounds us, there's a lot to keep up with. And I'm sure you want to get it right. I know I do. But sometimes we need help. We need to make lists. We need to set reminders on our phones.

And in the spirit of fostering self-reliance, we need to teach those in our care, how to keep up with all of this too. And if there are things that are important to get done and we do them over and over, then making a simple checklist that includes the essentials can make our lives much easier.

Even if you're not sure about it, it's worth experimenting. Each time you have that moment where you think to yourself, oh, I forgot about that, write it down and make a note. I forgot about this. And over a week or two,  you may come up with the list of things that you keep forgetting. Or wish you'd done at a different time.

You can take all of those notes. And build a checklist for yourself, to stay on top of the things that are most important to you. It's worked for me.

Now it doesn't always work every time. Sometimes I think -  I'll create this amazing checklist and it will solve all of my problems.

But that's not always true.  But there are a few that I continue to use that really help. So, if you can figure out what the most important things are to get done and create a simple checklist.  You may find that some of the complexity of the world becomes a lot easier to manage.

And if you share the same process with your kids, You may find that there's less and less things that you need to keep up with for them.

I hope you find this helpful. And remember there is no perpetual parenting handbook. We're all learning as we go.

And with curiosity as our map. And a good checklist. We can be ready for anything.

So good luck today. You've got this. See you tomorrow.
